GWH

Hearing impairments

Hearing loops are situated at many reception desks in the Great Western Hospital (GWH) including:

  • Main reception at the main entrance
  • Brunel Treatment Centre
  • Outpatient departments
  • Radiology and scanning departments
  • Urgent Treatment Centre and Emergency Department

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) have equipment to support hearing impairments including a portable hearing loop, digital listeners, and amplifiers.

British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting

You can connect with us directly in British Sign Language (BSL) from anywhere through Convo, our deaf-led remote interpreting service.

If you use BSL, you can call us through the Convo Now app on iOS, Android, or a web browser. Simply find us in the Community Directory. From the moment you connect, the interpreter is there, ready to reach the right person and support the conversation throughout.

In some cases, a face-to-face BSL interpreter may be required, and this can be arranged.

Contact a member of staff or the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) if you require BSL interpreting. You can also contact PALS via the Convo app.

All wards within the hospital have resource folders on sensory impairment with signs that can be placed above patients' beds if required.

Registered hearing dogs for the deaf are allowed on-site (please report to each ward/department reception upon arrival).

Getting started with Convo

First-time users will be asked to register once. This keeps your account secure and allows us to return your call if needed using your unique code.

To be able to receive callbacks from us, please provide us with your unique number, which is on the homepage of Convo Now.

This unique code will allow us to give you a callback. See our Knowledge Base for support in receiving callbacks.
